Sandra Weiner

(Drohiczyn, Poland, 1921 - 2014)

American, born Poland

Sandra Weiner immigrated with her parents to the United States in 1928 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1937. Weiner began her study of photography with Paul Strand at the Photo League in the 1940s. In 1942 she married Dan Weiner, a photojournalist, who she met while at the Photo League. From 1950-1959 they worked together at Fortune, Life, Collier's, Sports Illustrated, Harper's Bazaar and McCall's. After the death of her husband in 1959, she joined the editorial staff at Sport's Illustrated until 1964. In 1968 she published the first of many children's books illustrated with her photographs, "It's Wings That Make Birds Fly." In the 1970s-1980s she taught photography at New York University and City College of C.U.N.Y.
