Civil war between the Communists and the Nationalists continued in China, where the Japanese had been occupying the northern province of Manchuria since 1931. The guns, which echo the shape of the factory smokestacks, represent major suppliers of war materiel – companies in France, England, the United States, Germany and Czechoslovakia. In 1932, a French politician publicly accused several of these firms of channeling funds to Hitler.
