Callahan's scenes of urban life and architecture often show the city lacking in the kind of direct communication exemplified by the photographs of his wife. The multiple exposures used here suggest the crowded, repetative nature of urban life yet also its isolation. Dwarfed by buildings that form dark canyons, pedestrians stride side by side, almost touching eachother but never making contact.
