More Information

Well-known as a travel illustrator, Schell made several trips in the 1880s to Australia and New Zealand as part of an enormous project, a ‘Picturesque Atlas of Australasia’. Watercolors such as this one were on-site studies, which would later be translated into wood engravings to illustrate volumes for armchair travelers.
