This image was taken in and around Jerusalem during the last few days before the founding of the state of Israel, when the country was experiencing an uneasy transition from war to peace. This scene of a man stealthily approaching a hastily made barricade reminds us that war threatens and affects the lives not just of soldiers but also of civilians. Capa’s images are not just reportage but also moving statements about, as Naomi Rosenblum puts it, “the irrationality of war.”
