This image was taken in and around Jerusalem during the last few days before the founding of the state of Israel, when the country was experiencing an uneasy transition from war to peace. This view of the ruined chapel, occupied by Israeli soldiers fighting the Arabs through a break in the chapel wall, becomes a moving metaphor for the city’s religious divisions.
