This image was taken in and around Jerusalem during the last few days before the founding of the state of Israel, when the country was experiencing an uneasy transition from war to peace. This scene shows Jews fighting other Jews but also helping each other evacuate the wounded. It reveals the political complexity present even within a single side of the conflict.
