'Der Fleck auf dem Spiegel', seemingly simple yet profound, is one of Appelt’s only real self-portraits. By breathing on a mirror, the artist makes a mark that both signifies life and erases part of his own image (tellingly for an artist, his eye). A photograph – a reflection fixed in time – preserves this emblem of transience.
