Many of Kanwischer’s drawings of trees have soft, diffuse forms. Like American landscape painters at the turn-of-the-twentieth-century, he purposefully minimizes detail in order to emphasize mood. “I quote landscape tradition consciously,” he says, “but the digital sourcing of my work is very methodical, and that keeps the images from becoming too sentimental.”
