This study reveals how integral photography and collage are to Mickalene Thomas’ process in making one of her iconic rhinestone-encrusted paintings. She works closely with her models, carefully orchestrating their costumes, hair and makeup for photoshoots in environments she builds from vintage fabrics, furniture and memorabilia. Those photographs are collaged together with images of textiles and other patterned surfaces, such as parquet flooring, to create the total composition for the monumental painting on view nearby.
