Renouf inscribed this drawing “For Herbie – Happy Birthday, Love Edda.” Herbie refers to Herbert Vogel, who with his wife Dorothy acquired more than 4,000 works of art on modest salaries they earned as a postal worker and librarian. Renouf met the Vogels in New York in the late 1970s. They began collecting her drawings and visited her studio often to see new work. The Vogels introduced Renouf to other notable artists in their collection, including Silvia and Robert Mangold, Robert Ryman and Charles Clough. Renouf executed Memory Song -5 in her trademark process, incising lines into paper with an etching point before rubbing the surface with pastel.
