The Luxor Hotel is named for Luxor, Egypt—the location of King Tutankhamen’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. When it opened in 1993, the Luxor Hotel was the tallest building on the Las Vegas strip and cost $375 million to build. The 30-story hotel is 365 feet high and contains a 100,000 square foot casino and more than 2,500 rooms. At night, the Luxor Sky Beam – the strongest beam of light in the world at 42.3 billion candlepower – projects skyward out of the top of the pyramid.
