More Information

For her personal photography as well as her editorial assignments, such as this portrait for Vibe magazine, Modica uses an 8 x 10 in. film camera. Her choice of equipment captures incredible detail but requires significantly more time and technical involvement than smaller-scale cameras. The extra time and focus required for her process is important for Modica, who seeks to understand her subjects intellectually and emotionally through photography. Her intensity of focus and ability to invoke calm and seriousness in her sitters is evident in this bold yet quiet pair of portraits of Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison.
