In response to the deluge of distressing events he saw in the news, Robert Rauschenberg created multiple series of collages and prints using clippings from January and February 1970 issues of The New York Times, New York Daily News and Los Angeles Times. Made to protest ambivalence in the face of world events, this body of work was intended to encourage people to notice the day’s headlines. For the Surface Series, clippings were screenprinted on top of one another. The layered process allowed a black moiré pattern to appear in many of the prints, partially obscuring the text and imagery. The quantity of prints contributes to their cacophonous quality, echoing the constant delivery of modern news.
