More Information

Recognized for his austere style, Alex Katz executes prints and paintings with an economy of shape, tone and line. Best known for his portraits, Katz recruits subjects from his social circle, which includes critics, poets, dancers and fashion models, as well as other artists. This multi-part screenprint is based on a painting commissioned by Esquire magazine in 1983. Each of the five sections depicts two figures, among them artists David Salle, Red Grooms and Francesco Clemente. Pas de deux, which translates from French as “step of two,” is a duet in which a male and a female dancer perform ballet steps together. Here, Katz highlights the nuances of physical human contact and the clothing of his subjects, who wear fashions designed by Norma Kamali.
