More Information

Mark Mothersbaugh associates the scent of vulcanized rubber with his childhood in 1950s Akron. The scent emitted by the tire factories, which residents associated with prosperity, filled the air. Mothersbaugh created this sculpture, part of a series of bronze cones with custards made of different materials, as an homage to his hometown. The swirls at the top of the sculpture are cast in the same rubber used in the last remaining tire factory in Akron, operated by Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC. The custard’s dark, matte surface creates a striking contrast to the highly polished bronze cone.
