A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, Henry Mattson immigrated to Boston in 1905, then settled in Worcester, Massachusetts, drawn by its large Scandinavian population. Studying at the Worcester School of Art in the evenings, Mattson worked at a factory job during the day. He eventually moved to Woodstock, New York, an active artist colony. He painted landscapes, seascapes and night scenes, often imbuing his canvases with romance and mystery. “I paint the sea because I love it and fear it too. I think about it constantly, not so much what it looks like at any particular time but I think about its elemental aspect, its weight, it’s awesome depth, the powerful action of its waters.” — Henry Ellis Mattson
