Dugan has photographed Elcid since 2022, after meeting them when they were working at a coffee shop. In this acquisition, Elcid (green room) is represented by a larger 60 x 45-inch print size, which Dugan has only recently incorporated into their practice. The artist has shared this description of the work, ultimately connecting it to this new large size: “[Elcid identifies] as queer and nonbinary and are also a very spiritual, gentle, energy-sensitive person. This particular image was made in an arts hotel here in St. Louis called the Angad Arts Hotel, where the rooms are themed by color. Perhaps obviously, it is in dialogue with Baroque portrait painting and is informed by the broader art historical canon. I'm interested in creating representations of queer and gender expansive people in a very classical, dignified style. I particularly love this one at the larger size, in part because of its reference to painting, but also just because it's beautiful at that scale.”
