More Information

For Art Muezim was found in Chuck Auerbach’s home many years after McMoore’s death, and the drawing seems to provide a message from beyond the grave: that it should be displayed at the Akron Art Museum. It is addressed from Alfred to Chuck for “Art Muezim on E Market.” Auerbach supported McMoore in his artistic endeavors, promoting his work to collectors and dealers regionally, and securing his only gallery exhibition, with Aarne Anton in the mid-1990s. He also placed two of McMoore’s drawings with the Akron Art Museum. Because McMoore’s preferred medium of long scrolls of paper was impractical for collecting and display, Auerbach supplied smaller boards like these to the artist in the hope of expanding the possibilities of disseminating McMoore’s art. The female figure with ornate lamps emanating from her head is E Honorable Johnson, who was the artist’s sister, Evelina. She appears frequently in his artwork, often along with other members of his extended family. The architecture that surrounds the figure is ornate and likely inspired by the churches in Akron that the artist often visited.
