<SPAN xss=removed>Walker Evans photographed Robert and Mary Frank following the couple’s separation and on property Robert had purchased in Nova Scotia with June Leaf, whom he later married. These factors undoubtedly contributed to their uncomfortable postures. Robert Frank and Walker Evans had known each other for some time when this image was taken, with Frank describing Evans’s American Photographs (published 1938) as a key influence on his own seminal publication, The Americans (1959). Allan Ginsberg referred to Evans, who supported Frank’s application to receive the Guggenheim Fellowship that allowed for his extended travels throughout the United States in 1955-56, as “Robert’s patron U. S. spiritual friend protector.”</SPAN>
