More Information

Influenced by Atget, Evans’s early New York scenes focus not on the city’s grandeur but instead on ordinary people and activities. The informality and stop-action nature of this snapshot-like image suggest the city’s hectic pace and helped lay a foundation for later “street photographers” such as Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand.
