Influenced by European modernism, including Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism, Sommer assimilated these art movements and combined them with Midwestern imagery to create his own unique style. Music (Bach and Wagner were his favorites), philosophy, literature and his friendship with poet Hart Crane also helped develop the artist’s aesthetic.
