Ed Ruscha (pronounced roo-SHAY) is inspired by the commercial signs and imagery that Americans encounter in their daily life. Ruscha often employs irony as an artistic strategy by isolating words and phrases with provocative double meanings. The self-effacing text, “Excuse Me I Didn't Mean To Interrupt,” contradicts the notion that artworks should invite attention from the viewer. Ruscha presents this phrase, which implies face-to-face contact, in the public form of a sign. He leaves unclear who is speaking and who is being addressed.
