Tiffany made his first stained-glass lamps in 1899. By 1906 more than 125 different shades and scores of bases could be ordered from his New York firm, Tiffany Studios. Most of Tiffany’s lamp designs, including this one, reflect his affinity with the European Art Nouveau style in which artists combined sinuous lines and high-keyed colors to create new interpretations of nature, especially birds, insects, and flowers.
