Reid specialized in images of modishly dressed or slinky nude figures surrounded by decorative objects. The Japanese screen in the background, one of the artist’s most prized possessions, appears in many of his paintings. This work is part of a series inspired by an 1893 play by Austrian author Arthur Schnitzler about the marital indiscretions of Anatol, a wealthy gentleman. He is presented here as a harlequin (a buffoonish figure) serenading Circe, the ultimate femme fatale.
