Glacken began his fine art career painting alongside William Henri, Everett Shinn, John Sloan, and the other "Ash Can" artists creating sympathetic depictions of working class city life. After 1910, however, when Glackens began to assimilate the influence of the French artist Pierre Auguste Renoir, he developed a soft, feathery brushstroke and began to focus more on conventionally pretty subject matter, exemplified by this late work.
