While Walker Evans’s image of the coal miner’s house (Interior Detail, West Virginia Coal Miner’s House, I-54, dated 1935) lends poverty a certain charm and dignity, Yavno’s image of a Philadelphia slum gives the viewer no sugar-coating for the filth and horror of urban poverty.
