In the early 1970s, Baldessari began incorporating old Hollywood film stills in his paintings and prints, commenting that he loved creating new realities by manipulating the assumed truthfulness of photographs. This photogravure reproduces six film stills that depict men being throttled, suffocated or otherwise gagged. The double meaning of “gag” refers both to the specific act of strangulation and a harmless prank. As in many of Baldessari’s works, 'Six Colorful Gags' presents a combination of pop playfulness and sinister undercurrents.
