A championship fencer who represented the United States in the Olympics in 1928 and 1932, Nickolas Muray gained distinction in the 1920s for his photographic portraits of leading artists and politicians. Here the photographer captures a playful moment between Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Coyoacán, the section of Mexico City where they resided. The intimacy Muray conveys is ironic given that he and Kahlo, who he photographed on many occasions, were lovers throughout the 1930s, a relationship Muray terminated only after Kahlo divorced and subsequently remarried Rivera in 1940.</SPAN>
