Devo on the Streets of Downtown Akron

The new wave band Devo began as a conceptual art project and performed its first concert in 1973, led by Kent State students Gerald Casale, Bob Lewis and Mark Mothersbaugh. They took the name from their concept of de-evolution: “the idea that instead of evolving, mankind has actually regressed, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society.” On March 12, 1977, the band performed at the Akron Art Museum. Macoska’s photographs were taken a year later, just three months before the appearance of the group’s first album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo, which was produced by Brian Eno.
