More Information

Eugene Goldbeck first visited Alaska in 1910, after finishing high school in his hometown of San Antonio. His interest in travel and panoramic photography led to a career taking group shots on military bases in and outside the United States. Goldbeck’s motorized camera, called a Cirkut, wound film as the camera panned, resulting in negatives up to 60 inches long. Late in his career, the artist travelled for pleasure, photographing scenic landscapes and city skylines around the world. Here, he captures Denali, the tallest peak in North America, once named for President McKinley. This breathtaking shot required several attempts due to heavy fog and low visibility.
