More Information

"Welcome" is based on the story of Cupid and Psyche. It represents the first time Cupid, materializing on earth, sees Psyche. Although Mitchell's sculpture differs slightly in interpretation, it is essentially the same as the original tale. He said he took "artistic liberty" in his interpretation. Questions regarding the aesthetics of the sculpture are the result of the artist's discretionary taste: Cupid has no wings because Mitchell couldn't get them to look good, and he is bursting from the flower because this is how Mitchell interprets Cupid materializing on earth.
