This image, produced by a professional photographer for tourists (or armchair tourists), shows one of Vienna’s oldest heirlooms and tourist attractions, the stump of a tree full of nails driven into set into a marble niche. The most common legend about it (there are many) relates that medieval journeymen locksmiths each pounded a nail into the stump upon their departure from the city.
