After years of working as a theatrical scene painter and greeting card illustrator, Murphy eagerly embraced tonalism—an early 20th century American painting style that emphasized mood over content-- as a way to create more poetic imagery. His mature paintings feature simple landscapes rendered in subtle variations of color. Murphy’s interest in the quiet and subdued aspects of nature can be read in the bare trees and empty horizon of 'Afternoon in November'.
