Late in his career, Eugene Von Bruenchenhein created a group of architecturally-inspired paintings. Their sense of three-dimensional depth was inspired by the artist’s fascination with sculpture. In this untitled painting, Bruenchenhein depicts a grand city with skyscrapers utilizing the neon and bright color palette that he maintained throughout his long career. Over the base of the city, long, arching lines cross through the foreground— a technique he developed by running his fingers over the canvas. A self-taught painter, the artist also engaged in many different forms of expression, including poetry, photography, and drawing. Even splitting his time among these many different interests, Bruenchenhein completed over 1000 paintings.
