More Information

Sommer married Martha (“Mart”) Obermeyer in 1894 in New York; the couple had three sons. In 1907, the family moved to Northeast Ohio. Sommer drew this portrait of his wife using a realistic technique, but colored the image with high-keyed hues that reflect his interest in German Expressionism and French “Fauve” painters such as Henri Matisse.
