Since the late 1990s, Joe Vitone has worked on Family Records, an ongoing series of large-format photographs of members of his and his wife’s families, who live in Akron and surrounding communities. Initially making black and white prints, Vitone has begun to use color film to document the aging, new partners, births and absences his relatives have experienced over the course of nearly two decades. Although Salvatore and his firstborn son Marc, who lives nearby, are clearly posing for the artist in this early photograph, their stances and expressions suggest the complexity of their relationship.
