2020 Objects to be Destroyed, Theresa Bembnister La Wilson made this work as a tribute to the artist Jackson Pollock, who dripped and poured paint on canvas to create marks guided by his subconscious. Wilson also believed her process was guided by her unconscious mind. “I try to steer clear of objects that are too loaded with meaning; but then, when I think about it, everything I use is loaded—snakes, pencils, firecrackers, matches, hair pins,” she remarked. “What I try to do is free myself from the conscious associations so that the unconscious ones can take over. I am much more interested in what I don’t know than what I do know.”
