A pioneer of color photography, Klute headed Kodak’s Visual Research Studio and helped perfect the dye transfer process for photographic prints. In her free time, to explore the limits of the process and express herself artistically, she photographed nature. The woods were one of her favorite environments. Their vivid colors, subtle variations of hue and extreme contrasts of light and shade present a steep challenge for any color process. Klute’s goal in photographing was “to somehow express the feeling one experiences being out of doors.” “I am concerned with the delight to the senses as much as with the intellectual. The woods are mystical and enchanting to me as well as spiritual.”
