Inness’s paintings of hazy meadows and misty forest interiors represent a union of his aesthetic taste and philosophical beliefs. Having studied the writings of the 18th century Swedish mystic Emmanuel Swedenborg, Inness embraced the idea that everything in the natural world is united by a divine life force. The artist expressed this spiritual connection in Late Afternoon, October, in which the trees and tall grasses seem to reach out and enfold the woman and child standing in the center.
