Dwight Tryon’s training with French Barbizon painter Charles-François Daubigny and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris produced a style that reflected both the real and the ideal. Upon returning to New York in 1881, Tryon began to compose his landscapes with muted palettes of earthy hues. The Barbizon School practice of sketching outdoors generated a curiosity in the changing seasons as well as the quality of light throughout the day, which is reflected in 'Evening—October'.
