Chalma, just west of Cuernavaca, is the second most-visited pilgrimage site in Mexico. A pre-Columbian holy site, it has been a Christian shrine dedicated to Saint Michael since the mid-16th century. The site’s patron saint is often depicted with a drawn sword triumphing over the Devil or demons, as the child representing the Archangel is posed in this pilgrimage or festival tableau.
