The images of the carp, borrowed from a wood-block print by Hiroshige (a noted 19th-century Japanese woodblock artist), are seen atop a view of the modern day Paguate Village, population 464. The carp adorns pennants flown on Children’s Day in Japan, a celebration of life for boys ages 6 and 7, and represents good luck. At the Laguna Pueblo Reservation, residents continue to live in the village even though they know it is contaminated with radiation from the mine waste.
