More Information

The Nazca were a pre-Incan culture in southeast Peru that thrived for nearly 1,000 years beginning in 500 BCE. They created the Nazca lines, whose function is unknown, in the arid desert near the modern town of Nazca. The lines were first discovered by American anthropologist Alfred Kroeber in 1926. The letters APRA, which appear near the lines, are an acronym for Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana, a center-left Peruvian political party founded in 1924. Similarly, the letters PSR are an acronym for another Peruvian political party: the Partido Socialista Revolucionario, founded in 1976.
