In this seemingly simplistic drawing, Judy Rifka makes reference to numerous art historical movements. Rifka’s magic marker rendering of the Parthenon—the quintessential example of classical architecture—suggests the deadpan, oversimplified way that pop artists depict recognizable imagery. The artist’s loose, hurried marks give it an expressionistic feel, but the pink colors and sun hanging in the sky render it an impressionistic view of sunset on the Acropolis. Meanwhile, Rifka sets the scene floating on a generous white backdrop, entreating us to consider the empty space around the image.
