This drawing is the sole work by John Salt in the Vogel collection. According to the artist, the Vogels invited him and his wife to visit them in their apartment, where he recalls eating seed cake and seeing artwork by major New York artists of the time. To thank the Vogels, Salt gave them this affectionate memory drawing, which features artwork as well as the couple’s infamous, much beloved cats lounging in their living room. A photorealist painter, Salt moved to New York City in 1969. The Vogels’ drawing is much looser in style than the artist’s characteristic photorealist work.
