Early in his career, Daryl Trivieri worked as a science fiction illustrator. As the otherworldly subject matter of this later painting shows, that experience continued to influence his art. The picture includes fishy aliens battling a hero with the body of an angel and the head of a housecat, while the biblical figure Moses—whose appearance matches an Italian Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo—looks on. Trivieri was excited by the possibility of combining such wide varieties of source material in his works. Through this approach, his photorealistic paintings could go beyond the familiar and into the extraordinary. He started pictures like this one with precise, freehand airbrush painting and then added surface drawing and scratching, creating elaborate physical layering on top of his dense layering of imagery.
