More Information

Around 11:30 pm, station agent James L. Akers raised his lantern to send a “highball”—a signal that there are no passengers to board and the tracks are clear to move ahead. Link captured one of the last times this scene took place, as steam passenger service ended on the Bristol line of the Radford Division less than a week later.
