<SPAN STYLE="font-family:'HelveticaNeueLT Std Cn'">The 1968 publication of The Bikeriders earned Danny Lyon recognition as a leading figure in the emerging style of New Journalism, characterized by reporters becoming immersed as active participants with their subjects. As a University of Chicago history major, Lyon had traveled to the South as a photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Soon after returning, his interest was piqued by dirt-track “scrambles” and in 1963 Lyon joined the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club with the intention to “record and glorify the life of the American bikerider.” Over four years, Lyon photographed and taped members on rides and at races, meetings, and other events. Lyon’s portrayal of the riders has been described as “unforgiving and brutal. . . . But when you read between the lines, you can see love and respect underneath the violence.”</SPAN>
