Along with her exploration in the early 1970s of the informal nature of the snapshot, Escape also deals with the artist’s need to break free from an urban apartment in which she felt trapped and removed from nature. Some of the images in this group are metaphorical escapes—dreams, water, mirrors—while others depict more literal escapes such as a flight to Florida for her sister’s wedding or her move to a new home with a yard. The imagery contained in these early photographs surfaces throughout the artist’s career.
